• A sunscreen product is the last protection measure, not the first. It is imperative that you do more to protect yourself. Contrary to popular belief, no sunscreen product will provide total protection. The general advice is to seek shade during the peak sun hours between 12 and 2 pm and to wear protective clothing and headgear. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. Avoid burning at all times. Because both UVA and UVB radiation can cause skin cancer.
  • Apply adequate sun protection . A sun protection product is only effective if you apply the right amount. In the USA, the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) requires that all sun protection be tested with 2mg of product per square centimeter of skin. That is, an adult wearing only shorts should use more than 28 grams (4.5 tablespoons) of sunscreen at a time to properly protect all skin exposed to the sun. About a teaspoon of product is needed to properly protect your face, ears and neck. If you use less than the right amount, your sun protection will protect a lot less well.
  • Apply on time, reapply on time . Most sunscreens should be applied at least 30 minutes before going into the mood. If you apply the product shorter in advance, the protective effect is less. It is very important to reapply sun protection regularly. If you are in the sun for a long time, at least every 90 minutes. Regardless of how 'water proof' a product is, it's a good idea to reapply sunscreen after being in water, perspiring or towel drying. By applying and repeating your protection on time, your sun protection product will work most effectively.
